G.I. Joe Feature Character Spotlight
Firefly

1984 Style Molds

Preproduction figure molded in metallic green.  It was  proposed for the BJ's 8-pack.  Some other figures (Roadblock, Fast Blast Viper, etc.) changed colors so the final look had the Joe team members in dark colored outfits, and the Cobras done in red. Note the ghost-white flesh tone around eyes.

Prototype Firefly available from the 2003 Convention.  VSP's produced when using the mold to make the Black Dragon Infiltrator / Cobra Island Infiltrator 2-pack.

Preproduction figure initially designed for the Cobra Strike Team : Urban Division.  The camo colors on the head, torso and arms are different than the final release.  The red is suppose to be dark gray, and the  silver was changed to off-white.  The blue has remained the same. Also note, there is no camo on the waist or legs like the final release figure.

1992 Style Mold

Prototype.  Notice closely the small black flecks in the plastic.  It is caused from residual plastic mixing with the final green and flesh production colors.

2002 Style Molds

Prototype : Early stage figure with the unreleased "tall torso" and there are no holes in feet.  Feet are sculpted with treads on the boots.

Prototype : Another early stage figure.  From the same style mold as the figure on the left, but done in different colors.

Unreleased Wave 3 Firefly (and Nunchuk) Repaints: Although this Brown Firefly doesn't match to the hand painted prototype, it is believed this would have been the final version.  Note that the Nunchuck does match with its proposed prototype.

Preproduction "tall torso".  Click to enlarge each of the 4 pictures to see how the bottom (abdomen) was shortened for the final release.  The figure actually looks more in proportion in this preproduction state.  Many figures in this time period suffer from the "short torso - long leg syndrome".  There are 2 theories why this was done. 1) It is believed this Wave 2 JVC mold was initially made like the infamous "T-Crotch" Wave 1 figures.  So there were several retooling stages that had to take place to make the mold into the normal O-ring design.  2) Or, the mold was never done in the "T-Crotch" design, and the torso was simply sculpted too tall.  Thus it was later corrected for the final release.

2004 Style Mold

Prototype.  This figure is molded in production colors, but it is not painted.

12" - 2002 Style Mold

Unpainted Prototype: Note there is no paint on the figure or accessories.  There is also no Cobra logo printed on the shorts.
